check out the article in may 11th New Yorker on green dot  -- it's
good.  at the very end of the article, the secret to their success is
revealed.  OVER-EXTENSION OF SELF.  I call it the Jaime Escalante model
of reform (work so hard you end up losing your family and having a
heart attack).  That is the only way to "close the achievement gap" in
the current 19th century factory model of education we have.

they also have money for supportive services, and transform big schools into small schools.

Barr
is being feted by arne duncan as we speak.  he's popular because he has
figured out how to co-opt teacher unions and do leveraged take overs of
public schools (principally by appealing to parents for whom the
teacher unions have presented no alternative model to the status quo).
