According to a USED press release on Sec Duncan's listening tour:
Other states targeted for potential events include Michigan, Vermont, California, Montana, Wyoming, New Jersey, Tennessee, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Ohio, Indiana, Florida, Utah, and Alaska. Additional states and events may be added during the course of the tour.
We have views on NCLB, testing, privatization, etc. Sec Duncan will be at events in many states. Folks need to show up and make comments and raise questions. At his event in West Virginia, a woman explaining how NCLB is hurting, not helping her child attracted national media attention. Local/state media are likely to be in attendance.
So show up and be heard.
My experience is that the Sec will give vague responses. Come prepared: think hard on questions that get to the heart of key issues and do your best to ask questions that if he does not respond, the non-response will be visible to the audience. You will need to be brief, but in your brevity you can also frame a point of view and make a key statement that others present will here.
In short: go, get friends and colleagues to go, be a presence.
Now, that said, I do not know what it takes to get into one of these events. I am hoping NEA and it state affiliates and other large groups will be circulating that info, so if you are part of one of those groups, be sure you are on any list to receive such info.
We will try to follow where Duncan will be when, but we encourage other people to also do this - and spread the word.
Monty
