Go to
http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/curriculum/2009/07/draft_of_common_standards_gets.html

and you can link to the draft common core document as well as see the immediate negative reactions from the pedagogical conservatives (once again putting 'skills' against 'content,' by which most of them seem to mean something to memorize and regurgitate). A person linked to CCSSO told me this morning that only content with evidence it is really needed to be 'college ready' is included, with one result being that there is little Algebra II, since only STEM students really need it in their college work. If true, score one for common sense - tho the related point that all students should have a fair and equitable opportunity to learn Algebra II (etc) must also be defended.

It'll be interesting to see how the wars break down (the reactionaries are already aggressive, who knows what anyone else with possible political clout will say), to say nothing of what will happen when this moves into the political realm of the states. And if the battles are fierce over the standards, what will the sponsoring organizations or Sec. Duncan do?
