Dear Bernadette,
You might find this documentary useful for your diversity classroom: *A
Place at the Table: History and Identity through the Eyes of Today's
Youth*(2000), 40minutes. In this documentary, teenagers of African,
Asian, Latino,
Native, and European descent tell of the origin of their family cultural
background, the discrimination their family members went through, and their
struggles as they fought against that discrimination.
Another documentary that might be also useful for your diversity classroom
is D*omino: Interracial Children and the Search for Identity* (1995). This
Canada-based film portrays the stories of six interracial or intercultural
people who explore issues of identity, cultural isolation, and the search
for community. It will demonstrate for students a source of strength and
enrichment that people living intimately within two cultures inherit,
although at times they find themselves subjects of discrimination and/or
identity ambivalence. I think the film is a good illustration of cultural
diversity and cultural contacts in a multicultural society like Canada and
the States, but maybe the age group does not very much fit your teenage
students because the people in this film are mostly adults. You may need to
adapt it if you would like to use it.
Hope this helps.
Warm regards,
Hong Nguyen
