Dear friends,
Please let your Tucson, Arizona colleagues know of this exciting
professional development opportunity!
The Border Studies Teacher Training Program will equip Tucson middle and
high school teachers with the knowledge, tools, and support to integrate
U.S.-Mexico Border Studies into their classrooms. Participants will
take part in a four-day delegation to the border and a subsequent
two-day in-service in Tucson. This program will provide a platform for
educators to experience and build learning strategies on border issues
with fellow Tucson teachers. Led by a bi-national BorderLinks
leadership team, participants will explore the complexities of the
U.S./Mexico border through a joint analysis of the following core
themes:
Migration
Border Militarization and Security
The Mexican Educational System
U.S.-Mexico Relations and Politics
NAFTA and Global Economics
Human Rights and Labor Conditions
Gender and Identity
Border Arts and Culture
Potential visits along the border including academics, human rights
activists, labor organizers, community leaders, immigration specialists,
public defenders, border artists, migrants, maquilas (foreign-owned
assembly plants), U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and micro-credit
institutions. Participants will have the opportunity to stay with host
families in Nogales and engage with local community members. The Tucson
in-service will facilitate a process for participants to apply the
delegation experience to their classrooms.
Dates:
The Teacher Training Program delegation is scheduled from June 16-20,
2009. The Tucson in-service will take place June 23-24, 2009. Accepted
participants must attend both sessions.
Cost:
As a grant-funded initiative, there is no cost for Tucson teachers
selected to take part in the Border Studies Teacher Training Program.
