Hello All- for those of you in the Puget Sound area of Washington state,
here is an upcoming event at 6:30 PM on Wednesday April 29, 2009 to help
celebrate the wonderful new book "Rethinking Early Childhood Education".
Please help spread the word to folks you know who might be interested-
thanks so much, Sarah
Dear friends and colleagues,
Puget Sound Rethinking Schools is happy to invite you to a gathering at 6:30
PM on Wednesday April 29, 2009 in honor of the publication of "Rethinking
Early Childhood Education".
This book is an anthology of writing about social justice teaching with
children from preschool through fourth grade, and about advocacy by and for
families and child care teachers. The book includes contributions from
several local Seattle area folks, including Hilda Magana, Julie Bisson,
Margie Carter, and editor Ann Pelo. Several of the contributors will
be at the gathering to talk about and sign copies of the book.
The gathering is on Wednesday April 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at University
Friends Meeting Place, 4001 9th Avenue NE, Seattle. Here is a link to a map
for directions. http://www.scn.org/friends/ufm.html
We hope you'll be able to come to the gathering. Please share this
information with early childhood colleagues- including
elementary school educators, local early childhood organizations and
networks in which you participate, and with families of young children in
your community. The evening promises to be energizing and celebrative, and
an opportunity to come together with other people committed to social
justice teaching and learning.
Here is what Louise Derman-Sparks and Herb Kohl have to say about
"Rethinking Early Childhood Education":
"Rethinking Early Childhood Education places understanding of what is mine,
what is yours, and what is ours at the center of the development of values
in childhood and therefore emphasizes the importance teaching for social
justice and cultural sensitivity during the early years of life. The book
discusses culturally sensitive anti-bias teaching and the importance of
play; it is also full of ideas about engaging parents and communities in
children's development, teaching ideas and suggestions about how teachers
can become children's advocates. It is an invaluable, useful addition to the
literature of early childhood education."
Herb Kohl
Educator and author most recently of Painting Chinese: A Lifelong Teacher
Gains the Wisdom of Youth
"If you are an educator who upholds the principle of early childhood
education's attention to the whole child, then Rethinking Early Childhood
Education is for you. The diverse articles give insightful, practical and
moving voice to teachers' experiences with children and families and make
diversity, equity, inclusion, and preserving the environment integral to a
quality early childhood education program."
