Dear friends,
For nearly a year people in the Social Studies Task Force in
Milwaukee have been waging a battle to not adopt a nationally
produced social studies text book series and instead purchase quality
fiction and non-fiction books and resources for our students and
teachers. The SSTF includes people from Rethinking Schools,
Educators' Network for Social Justice, NAACP, the Milwaukee Area
Jewish Committee, YWCA, area universities, classroom teachers,
librarians and other community activists. Our website is
www.socialstudiesresources.org -- please check it out and add
resources if you wish.

We are at the point where groups of teachers and community/university
folks are meeting in all day sessions to identify resources for
purchase for all the elementary classrooms in Milwaukee Public
Schools. We are looking for materials for kindergarten through fifth
grade in these areas:

picture books (fiction and non-fiction)
non-fiction children books
historical fiction (reading levels 1st grade - 6th grade)
teacher resources (guides, background info)
poetry books/collections
on-line sites that are particularly useful for classroom teachers
teaching social studies from an anti-racist/social justice perspective.
photo collections, Maps, Posters

Any suggestions you have we'd welcome. We will be keeping a list of
materials that we ultimately recommend and make it available to
others who express interest in it.

Sincerely,
Bob Peterson
