Dear Rethinking Schools friends,
If possible, please join us in Seattle for the first annual Teaching for
Social Justice conference on Saturday October 4th: "Rethinking Our Classrooms,
Organizing for Better Schools." Details are posted at the conference website:
www.nwtsj.org.
9 am to 4 pm
Meany Middle School
301 21st Ave. E.
Seattle, WA
This will be a chance to meet other K-12 teachers, student teachers, teacher
educators, and parent activists who see their work as part of a broader
education for social justice project. There will be excellent workshops,
discussions, and displays of social justice teaching materials, including Rethinking
Schools magazines and books.
The keynote speaker will be Rethinking Schools editor, and author of Reading,
Writing, and Rising Up, Linda Christensen. Linda's talk is titled, "The Power
of Language in School," and will feature stories and examples from her 30
years in the classroom helping students connect language, their lives, and the
broader society.
A few of the almost 25 workshops include: “Rookies for Social Justice,” for
new and future teachers; “Living Algebra, Living Wage,” about linking math to
real-world problems; “Civil Rights in the Pacific Northwest,” on teaching
World War II-era Japanese American internment; and "Beyond Kyoto," exploring how
to teach about climate change and the atmospheric commons. I will also be
leading a workshop, "Rethinking The Line Between Us," demonstrating activities
that introduce students to the dramatic history of the U.S. border with Mexico.
Other Rethinking Schools writers leading workshops include: Jana Dean, Ian
McFeat, Tim Swinehart, Swapna Mukhopadhyay, Amy Ambrosio, and Michi Thacker.
All this and lots more -- and lunch! -- for only $25; $5 for students.
The conference is sponsored by Puget Sound Rethinking Schools in Seattle,
Portland Area Rethinking Schools, Olympia Educators for Social Justice, and the
Tacoma Friday Club, as well as Rethinking Schools magazine.
Feel free to email me with questions, bbpdx at aol.com, or check out the
website: www.nwtsj.org.
Please help us spread the word about the conference.
Thanks for your support of Rethinking Schools.
