Progressive Educators Conference
The North Dakota Study Group will hold its annual conference for progressive educators outside of Chicago on February 12-15, 2009. Participants in the Rethinking Schools listserv are likely to be very interested in this event. (The name comes from its original meeting in North Dakota convened by Vito Perrone.)
Each year this small gathering enables participants to hear presentations from prominent progressive educators, grapple with important educational issues, and spend time sharing ideas and experiences. We are like-minded but value probing discussion. We include teachers, students, college professors and other activists.
This year we will hear from British educator Michael Armstrong, focus on immigration, discuss efforts to overhaul NCLB and state high-stakes testing programs, learn about youth organizing in south Texas and New York City, and consider teachers' efforts to infuse social justice into their curricula. Workshops - 'works in progress' provide smaller venues for in-depth exploration of a variety of projects and themes.
For more information and registration materials, go to www.ndsg.org. The conference fees are $450, but if you register by December 17, you get a $25 discount.
